How to Avoid Marketing Mistakes
Aug 18th, 2009 | By Patrysha | Category: MarketingThere is no way to completely avoid making some errors and misjudgments in the marketing of your small business. That’s life and it will happen that you will kick yourself for doing (or not doing) exactly the right thing at the right time.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to prevent some marketing mistakes simply by making yourself aware of potential obstacles.
Here are three things to keep in mind as you plan the next sales promotion campaign for your small business.
Budget Realistically – Many small shop operations build their marketing budget on what they have on hand or available credit, it often is much easier on your wallet to base your budget on what you plan to achieve. This forces you to set goals for the campaign first and will result in a budget that works for your business.
Don’t overlook free - If you’re used to judging quality based on price point it can be hard to judge the value of free marketing and promotions resources. Used wisely free opportunities can yield a much bigger return than some high cost efforts. The key is researching (or using a great marketing consultant…hint, hint) to find out which methods are worth trying for your business and which ones aren’t. By combining free efforts with paid ones, you can open more doors to potential customers.
Avoid Me too efforts – Though it’s tempting to copy other businesses that appear to be doing well with their marketing efforts, it is not a good idea to do so without adapting it to your business needs. If you’re just doing what everyone else is doing or just doing things as you have always done them with no testing and measuring – you are without a doubt losing sales. Copy cats never make the same impression on a target market that a trailblazer can. Be unique and true to to your brand for the best marketing results.

Yes, I agree there. I think those can be avoided by good intuition and staying away from obvious red flags.
It’s not new though. When I was 17, I blew $40 I really couldn’t afford at the time on a mail order book advertised in the classifieds. Information I could have gathered at the library for free…
Of course, most of my clients are not running internet businesses or even thinking about running an online business—they own brick and mortar businesses serving a primarily local (to them, not necessarily local to me) market.
